Across the United States and around the globe, young people on college campuses, in high school cafeterias and in professional offices have joined a movement of mutual respect and human dignity called “Spread the Word to End the Word.” The goal: Get people to stop and think about their hurtful and disparaging use of the word “retard” – and to pledge to stop using it.
Perfect Sense first partnered with Special Olympics on March 31, 2009, to mark the first-ever day of awareness for “Spread the Word to End the Word” with the launch of the campaign website; we worked with them again in 2010 to refresh the site for the second annual campaign.
In February 2011, we again partnered with Special Olympics to add new features and content to the R-word website. The enhanced site now includes a robust, deep content experience that covers the history of the campaign, news and current events, and resources. It’s also deeply integrated with social media tools – users can make their pledges to end the use of the R-word and immediately send it to Facebook and Twitter.
