Points of Light Institute
In his 1989 inaugural address, President George H.W. Bush invoked a vision of a thousand points of light – and invited the American people to dedicate themselves to modern-day volunteerism. The Points of Light Institute was created in 1990 as an independent non-profit organization dedicated to this spirit of service. President George H.W. Bush exemplified that spirit throughout his presidency and afterward, actively helping in fundraising efforts following the Indian tsunami of 2004, Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and the Haitian earthquake of 2010.
In 2011, we partnered with the Points of Light Institute to create a new experience for visitors designed to honor President George H.W. Bush’s dedication to service. Visitors to the site can engage with an interactive timeline documenting his involvement in modern service, leave tributes to President George H.W. Bush, watch speeches, read news, and be inspired to volunteer – carrying on the lasting vision of a man who was determined to make the U.S. “a force for good.”
